Asphalt Paving

Your driveway will be smooth - we promise!

The most important concern for building the better driveway is the foundation. Asphalt is not stable; it relies on a good, solid base to sit on. Generally speaking the area must be excavated to approximately 10” below proposed finish grade. A minimum of 6” of ¾” crushed gravel must be placed, graded and compacted before paving. There are some instances where additional gravel must be added due to unfavorable pre-existing conditions and/or special measures be taken to address high water table or drainage issues. In many cases, the preparation is 75-80% responsible for the final outcome of a job.

Paving is normally done in 2 layers:
  • The first layer is a compacted 2” of ¾” binder.
  • The second layer is an additional 1” of ⅜” top.
  • The edges of the pavement are tamped to strengthen the sides and promote nicer straighter lines.
A single coat is also an option for a more economical budget:
  • Same attention to detail on the prep as a 2 coat job.
  • Paved in 1 single layer of asphalt. Compacted 2 ½ ” of ½” Top.
  • Edges tamped to promote stronger sides and straight lines
An Overlay could be another option if the current driveway is in decent enough shape with no major defects:
  • Driveway is cleaned and landscape is cut back enough to reveal edge of asphalt.
  • Keyways are cut at streets edge and any areas where the new asphalt will need to be tied in (walkways, Garage doors, etc…)
  • Small patch repairs are made where need be if any minor defects exist.
  • Paved on top of original driveway. Compacted 1 ½ “ of 3/8” top.
  • Emulation is used on steep inclines/Declines to promote better adhesion
  • Edges tamped to promote stronger sides and straight lines
Special attention must be given to the following:
  • Drainage: a minimal 2% slope.
  • Tie into road and sidewalks with saw-cut edges and emulsion.
  • Paving to local codes. Most cities and towns mandate a permit.
  • Consider irrigation – conduits should be placed in the gravel before paving to allow pipe and wire to cross the driveway.
  • Overlay – to overlay an existing driveway it must not be cracked or broken up and the slop must be good

A Durable Paving Option That Will Withstand the Test of Time

The standard life for pavement can be up to twenty years, depending on the use. Just like anything else, your asphalt will need to be maintained regularly to keep it in good condition through the years. Depending on the use and weather damage, among other factors, over time the asphalt may need to be replaced or resurfaced.

An area that has asphalt paving is easier to maintain, from both a landscaping and snow removal standpoint. Surfaces paved with asphalt will stay in better condition during shoveling or snow plowing, a critical factor to consider in New England.

For residences and businesses alike, a cleanly paved asphalt driveway will also improve your curb appeal.
