Patch Repair

Addressing Pavement Damage

There are a number of situations where pavement damage requires patch repair for a driveway or parking lot. There are a couple methods we use for repairing asphalt damage, whether cracking or potholes. When done correctly, patch repair can save you money on future repair expenses, while also preventing further damage to the asphalt.

Cracking is a common problem for homeowners and businesses alike. This can be caused from poorly applied asphalt, that was too thin, or damage from tree roots growing beneath the pavement. Regardless of the cause, when addressed early enough most cracks can be repaired through asphalt patching.
Potholes in pavement form as a result of wear and tear from both weather and heavy traffic in an area. Typically you will see potholes appear in the late winter, as the snow and ice begin to melt, or in early spring when the water on the pavement continuously freezes and thaws.

Asphalt Patching Techniques Fix Problems Before They Get Bigger

The best technique used to fix any sort of damage is a cute, rip, prep, and re-pave with emulsified seam. We cut and remove the damaged area. Evaluate what caused the issue in the first place and remove the source (rocks, Tree roots, etc…). We then backfill the hole using ¾” crushed gravel. After prep is finished we pave it in 1 or 2 coats (depending on the original thickness of the driveway or application) then finish it off with an emulsified seam.

The second technique can only really be used in potholes. We simply clean out the pothole and remove any loose asphalt or debris. Then once the area to be paved is addressed we simply fill the hole with new asphalt to alive the headache of having to drive through it every day. This is more of a temporary fix. Usually done if a new driveway, parking lot, or walk way is planed in the near future.

Get it done right the first time

The patching technique to be used is generally chosen based on a number of factors including extent of the damage, future paving plans and budgetary constraints. Theriault & Sons can help you to determine the best patching solution, and make the necessary repair to return your asphalt to good working order.
